Our First Message from Pastor Dan:

Greetings to you all, my new family in Christ! This is my first official publication with Shepherd of the Valley...how exciting! It is with great joy and anticipation that I await my arrival at the beginning of September. My wife Heather, my son Micah and I were so honored by your hospitality on July 10. Thank you, first of all, for all the work that went into that special evening. It was wonderful to meet so many of you, and we were washed over with good feelings about this big move, which I trust has ultimately been orchestrated by the Holy Spirit. As together we prepare for this transition, this new partnership, there are a few things I'd like you to consider. You've heard and learned a good deal about me already, and I'm sure you'll continue to hear about me as I minister in your midst. So I'd like to use this article to start the wheels in motion for learning more about you: 1) I'd like to sit down with as many of you as I possibly can in my first year at SVLC. Start the coffee a'brewin'; it's an icon of faith and fellowship! I am so excited about learning from each of you. How did you come to believe and think the way you do, what drew you to this congregation, and what of your family and history? So please begin thinking about these questions. 2) The best way to get to know you, I think, is by coming to your home. And that's what I'd like to do. Now, I realize that not everyone is enraptured with the idea of opening up their home. But some of you, I already believe, have the gift of hospitality. I'm wondering if a sign-up sheet might be circulated for willing hosts. Once that's been created, others could sign up to attend one of the many (hopefully) gatherings. I think you called them "cottage meetings" in an earlier phase of discernment. Can we do that again? Would some of you be willing to welcome a group of no-more-than-10, preferably 6 or 7, for an evening or afternoon of learning and sharing with one another? I'm envisioning this taking place over several months, if not an entire year. 3) I'd like you to begin (or perhaps begin again) "praying this question": What do you believe God is calling Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church to be and to do? We'll talk about this often...when we meet in homes, when we study at church, when we worship, when we serve. And your responses to this important question will lay the foundation as together we begin to identify, craft and re-craft our vision and mission as God's people in the world, as God's people in La Mesa, CA. So there are my requests of you. Thank you for considering them. Finally, I simply want to reiterate my excitement and thanksgiving for the opportunity to preach, teach and serve along side each of you. Please keep my family and me in your prayers through this time of transition, as I will continue to hold you all in mine. Together we'll sustain one another, as Christ directs us and the Spirit fills us. Peace and Joy, Pastor Dan |

Dear Friend in Christ,
On behalf of our Church, Welcome to the Shepherd of the Valley web site! Shepherd of the Valley is a worshiping community of God's people in the East County area of San Diego. We daily look to Jesus as the good shepherd, who desires throughout our lives to guide, nurture and challenge us, and who will one day welcome us into his heavenly kingdom. We believe that by his Holy Spirit our Lord's presence is made known in our midst through the Sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, the Word of God as it is preached, sung and taught, and through the people of this congregation. We would love to have you come to our congregation for worship and other activities, if you have not already done so! Moreover, as Pastors here, we would also welcome you to call us (whether member, friend of the church, or simply a "web surfer") if there is any way we can be of assistance, such as if:
