Confirmation Program

Interested in Confirmation? Contact the church office to speak to Pastor Dan. But here’s some basic info and FAQs:

Confirmation means the "affirmation of baptism" . Martin Luther said that It is a time when students of the faith learn about what baptism means. As theologian and former SVLC Pastor Dan Erlander puts it, what does it mean to be walking wet?

Why is Martin Luther winking?

The wink reminds us that even though confirmation is serious stuff, because of Jesus, we are free! "Marty" gets that! No longer held down by sin, we are free to enjoy life and friends and even church. Luther had a great sense of humor, and in confirmation we get to learn more about him, the church, and Christian beliefs, in that same spirit of playfulness and fun!

Who is eligible for Confirmation?

Confirmation is designed ideally for all students entering 7th, 8th, or 9th grade.

However, we certainly welcome others (high school students, college students, or adults),
who desire to be confirmed. Upon expressing interest, they meet with the pastor to discuss
a customized curriculum.

What kind of a time commitment is Confirmation?

Five full days over the course of a year (probably a Saturday). Pastor is willing to work with the families
participating to find dates that work for everyone.

What do I have to do to get confirmed at SVLC?

Confirmation Requirements:

We will take five “hands-on days” in the course of the year.
Each “hands-on day” will focus on one of the five components of the baptismal covenant (above).
For example, we will study “Serve all people, following the example of Jesus” by
visiting a social service agency for the morning, and then debriefing over lunch together.
Memory work – Students will memorize before they are confirmed:
Students will meet one-on-one with the pastor for a half hour before their Confirmation Day to talk about “what confirmation means to them” and any questions they might have.
Students are expected to attend and participate regularly in worship.
Students must attend one week of Confirmation Camp and (if offered) at least one Jr. High Retreat/Regional Event

What does it cost?

There are no dues for Confirmation itself. But the program is not completely free, as there will be registration costs for
camp, retreats, and money needed for meals and outings over the course of the year.
